Hi Rod
I have just had a wonderful conversation with Bill Dumbreck (72) What a delightful gentleman!

He has done some research and has quite a lot of information BUT he wants you to understand he is not interested in information being put on the Internet. He just does not trust it.

You probably know most of what he told me, however these are from notes I took when we were talking to each other.
great, great, Grand Parents. James Dumbreck married Margaret Emslie 1830
great Grandparents Alexander b1838 d1887 married Helen Mackie b1838 d1910
Grandparents William b1873 d1950 married A Mcwilliams b1898 d1950
Parents Alexander Dumbreck b1905 d1989 married Andrina Begley b1824
Children Elizabeth b1925, William(Bill) 1927 and Alexander 1936
(Alexander a Radiologist died last year, Bill returned for the funereal)

Children of William Michael b 1951 (quite person, not married, does not have telephone)
Denys Andrew Richard b1952 has a large transport business in Perth
and Brisbane. Children: Kim (adopted) Danielle & Caitlym
Helen b 1972 & Vivian (2 children & lives in Melbourne)

Bill has no contact with his son Denys (some family dispute he said) He also said he eventually received your letter-it was sent to his old address. You will know what that is all about.

Now here is where I get a bit confused although I can match this up with James bc 1810. William Dumbreck who lived in Kapunda Australia, purchased freehold land of four and a half acres with a mortgage of one hundred pounds. William married Helen O'Brian in 1876 in Emerald, (Goldmine towns in Aust. were always named after a precious stone) There were no children and William (Bill) Dumbreck remembers his father telling him that his grandfather received money from Australia from the estate.

Thomas b1840 d1908 purchased 5 3/4 acres for five hundred and thirty pounds also in Kapunda in 1875, he married Ann (presumably in Scotland in 1871) Thomas arrived in Sydney on the sailing ship 'Hampshire' in 1871. His wife arrived in Sydney 04.01.1872 on the sailing ship 'Galatea.' (I should be able to get photos of these ships) The trip took 140 days. Bill has copies of the passenger lists of both ships I understand. They had two children a son and daughter. I am not sure what happened to the son but the daughter, Kate Dumbreck married Rudolph Eberhart. They had eight children. The first four daughters were killed in a flash flood. They also had four sons. Bill said he had seen the tombstones of William & Tom. He also made contact with Kate Dumbreck's sons, but they told him they were more interested in the Eberhart side of the family, they had a photo of Kate Dumbreck but would not allow Tom to have it copied.

Other bits and pieces he told me which added to my confusion, in 1832 his G/G/Grandfather was in the Custom Service in 1832. Vincent D Dumbreck - book written. Jean Dumbreck (Harper) 1927
last brother James (82) was a district commander in Assam. India. He was awarded the MBE
Two tunes written by Piper Dumbreck composer, were, Mill Bank Cottage Uphill & Dovecote Park.
Bill has the music/record with the composers name on it. He said Piper Dumbreck was in the Cape Cod Highlanders in the Boer War. He also told me about the Dumbreck Collieries in Lanark. (I would be interested in more information regarding this) Plus there is a Dumbreck Street in Glasgow.

You would have to confirm all of this with Bill, as at times I did not have time to complete my notes.
And a lot of information you would already have. But Bill obviously has quite a few files of information as he would ask me to wait while he looked up some information. I was so impressed listening to him so kind & wise & knowledgeable (he reminded me of my own Scottish Grandad whom I adored.)

Well that's the best I could do for you, meantime I must finish my Gibson Family Newsletter and then I can get back to my friend Archie, who really has me puzzled. Also chase up Wayne my cousin who has the photo of Mary Dumbreck!!
