In 1806, at age 21, James settled on a farm in Center Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia.
James Kent was a Colonel in the first batallion of Colchester Militia and was universally known as colonel Kent.
James was musically inclined and started along with his sons and John Deckman the first musical club in Musquodoboit.
He apprenticed to a cabinet maker in Truro, Nova Scotia. His articles of Indenture, a quaint old document still lies in a pigeon hole of the Secretary made by his own hands.
He was also a justice of the peace, land surveyor and the first postmaster in the district.
