“The overcrowded port of Halifax suffered a great disaster on Dec. 6, 1917, when the French munitions ship Mont Blanc, after a collision with the Norwegian vessel Imo blew up in the Narrows, linking the outer harbor with Bedford Basin. Over 1600 people were killed and several thousand injured; the whole north end of the city was destroyed; property loss amounted to $35 million.”
