DROWNING ACCIDENT = Bertie Dunbrack, aged about nine years, was drowned last Saturday afternoon in Balch’s Pond, so-called. He and his little playmate, Howard Downing, were throwing stones on the ice and a couple of them did not go in the water. They both ventured on the ice to get the stones with Bertie ahead, and they had not gone but a few feet when the ice cracked and gave away, precipitating Bertie in the water. The Downing boy did not get into the water and tried all he could to get Bertie out. He lay down on his stomach and pushed his feet toward him and he took hold of him, but heing chilled he had to let go and sink. The Donwing boy ran home and told his mother of the accident. Help was immediately summoned and Benjamin Pond and another person went to the rescue and with the aid of a ladder the Dunbrack boy was gotten out. Dr. Cowles was summoned and he worked for some time over him to bring him to life but all his efforts proved unavailing.

Bertie Dunbrack was a nice little boy and a favorite with his playmates. His death is a sad calamity, and his widowed mother, brothers and sisters have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral was Monday. Rev. Wayland Spaulding officiated and burial was in the family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery. There was a profusion of flowers and his schoolmates contributed a beautiful piece. The singing was by the church choic.
