I would guess this picture is circa 1913
When my great grandmother Elizabeth died in 1944, I was told she weighed 300lbs and had been about
5 feet 9 inches tall. James was reported to be 6feet 4inchs tall. Someone told me recently that her daughter Elizabeth apparently was quite large as well. My grandmother, LuElla was about 225lbs and my mother was 265lbs when she died.

His death certificate shows B1847 but other records including Masonic & 1885 census make it to be 1857
from e-mail January 23, 2000
As to James C. Dumbreck. I have done the same searches as you are attempting. I even went through all of the other parishes on the chance they had moved by 1857.
What I have found on the 1851 census is what I believe to be his parents and siblings. I tried the 1861 census and they were no longer at the same address. On the 1851 I believe the following to be James Copeland Dumbrecks family living at 11 West Port (someone else is at that address in 1861.

John Copeland Dumbreck (the 8 year old above) ended up in Kansas by 1870. He had at least 2 children born in the United States by 1868. Had many children the same names as James' children - yes including an Elizabeth. I just have no written record of them being brothers. I have Alexander & Elizabeth's (her maiden name is Copeland) marriage info ( married 18 March, 1838 in W.Lothian), the birth records on the above listed children -- just not my James. All the males dead now with only female children who would not pass on the name. Tried to follow up on their married names and hit dead ends all around.
I have tried to speculate what happened that I couldn't find them on the 1861 census. I didn't check death records. I probably didn't pursue it as much as I should since at that time I had a lot less info than I have now. This was all done a few years ago. Do you know if there are indexes to the 1861 census. There were none when I was looking and I had to go line by line and I haven't checked lately.
The story I heard from my mother, and she was not a very reliable source, is that James came to the US when he was young and rode for the Pony Express and was called "the kid." My cousin George was told he rode shotgun for Wells Fargo. Possibly some grain of truth there somewhere
James left the family several times and travelled back and forth from Glasgow. Elizabeth Sr. was left to fend for herself. Must have been a hard life she led.
