NameCharles Dunbrack 25
Birth4 Jan 1780, Demarara, British Guiana
Death2 Mar 1844, New Hampshire Age: 64
Misc. Notes
Disagreement on birth year: Morning News of St. John’s, March 18, 1844, has death notice:
“In New Hampshire, March 2, Mr. Charles Dunbrack, in the 72d year of his age. Mr. D. was a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, and for many years a resident in Halifax N.S. He had resided there less than two years, but was esteemed as a humble christian, and a worthy man.”
This would make the year of his birth 1771 or 1772.
From the Nova Scotia Historical Review, Vol. 9, Number 2, 1989, p. 91,
in reference to the building of St. Pauls Church, Halifax:
Unfortunately since the minute book for the years 1801-1824 has been missing since the end of the last century, contemporary evidence of the discussions leading to the new construction is also missing. Fortunately, the contracts for its construction in the form of “memoranda” with estimates written in the hand of the contractor-builder, Charles Dunbrack, have survived amongst the churchwarden’s accounts at St. Paul’s.
The contractor-cum-builder, Charles Dunbrack (1771/2-1844), a carpenter by trade, was a native of Edinburgh who resided in Halifax for many years before moving to Saint John, New Brunswick and thence to New Hampshire, where he died. See Morning News (Saint John), 18 Mar. 1844.
Note: HFW believes Charles was the son of James Dunbrack and Ann Sharp, not Thomas Dunbrack and Margaret Baillie. He was borh 1771, which is consistent with birthdate of a Charles Dunbrack, christened 18 Dec 1771 in Rothes, Moray, Scotland.
