Jean was evacuated from Hadlow during the war, had a year without schooling, but then went to a school in Bridge of Allen, before joining the WREN's as a decoder. She was a member of the WRENs branch in Western Australia, but her battle with Parkinsons disease stopped her from attending meetings.

Mum met Denis in the UK whilst he was home on leave from Malaysia, in 1955.
They were married April 9th 1955 at Hadlow Church, with the reception at James House.
They left for Malaya shortly afterwards and lived at Temiang Estate in Negeri Sembilan for several years.
